Super mixed emotions reading the house across the lake. It started off great but then they lost me during the second half.

The house across the lake synopsis:

Pulled from Goodreads- Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family’s lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of liquor, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple who live in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing—a tech innovator, Tom is rich; and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous.

One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship. But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom’s marriage is not as perfect and placid as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey becomes consumed with finding out what happened to her. In the process, she uncovers eerie, darker truths that turn a tale of voyeurism and suspicion into a story of guilt, obsession and how looks can be very deceiving.

The house across the lake Characters:

Casey Fletcher– is the main character. She is a widowed and very nosey actress

Len– Casey’s husband

Marnie– Not really an important character but she is Casey’s cousin. Occasionally she calls in to check on casey.

The detective– I can’t for the life of me remember her name.

Tom royce– Katherine’s Husband, He’s some kind of tech CEO.  No personality to him whatsoever.

Katherine:  A retired Model, she married Tom Royce. There seems to be no love in that marriage at all.

Eli– An old man who lives at one of the houses at the lake. Casey has known him all her life. I thought he was a maintenance man at first. Because he takes care of everything like one.

Boone– A recovering alcoholic and ex police officer or detective. He helps Casey with this so-called case. He and Casey also have a little thing going on.

Okay so,

I’m not sure exactly where to begin with this book.

I didn’t think the book started out slow, I felt like we jumped right in it which I like. There was a lot of backstory, which is to be expected with any book.

But with this backstory it felt like so much information at once that I simply did not care for it. Like her acting career and how depressed she was when her husband Len died.

I barely read the parts with the Len flashbacks because I didn’t think it was important. So I skimmed through it.

Casey was hard to like for me because she drowned herself in alcohol to not feel I guess, I really didn’t get the sense that she was mourning her husband. Like girl he seemed boring anyways.

In the beginning we get the setup which is why Casey is at this lake house. That was strange because her mom really thought it would be a good idea for Casey to work on herself at the very lakehouse her husband drowned at? All alone? Knowing she has a drinking problem.

Weird..

Aren’t they rich as well? At least rent another house out.

But this specific one was around for ages, she used to go there as a child with her cousin Marnie.

The relationship with Casey and her family-  mostly her mom and cousin was also weird. They didn’t seem like they genuinely cared for her wellbeing. I’m not sure where her dad was or if she had any other siblings because if it was mentioned during the beginning, I zoned out.

Katherine and Tom Royce

So here comes the neighbors across from her house on the lake.

Katherine is a former model while her husband owns this tech company. If you have seen the third season of “you”, Sort of similar to that relationship.

Because of Casey being nosey and spying on the neighbors, One night she notices Katherine faced down in the lake so naturally she goes to save her.

She is able to save Katherine and they have a mini chat before Katherine thanks her and goes back home. The next day the two of them come over to thank Casey for saving Kaetherines life.

Eli is there as well and they start talking about how the lake is haunted and at night blah blah the reflection of the water is blah blah dangerous.

I have to be honest this part didn’t stand out to me as something important.

After the night ends, Casey continues to watch through her binoculars at their house because at this point Katherine has been telling her about her marriage with Tom.

What is going on?

This is where they lost me, I was following along with the story so far. I was like, ook the twists are twisting and the plots unraveling.

But when they introduced ghost possession, I was confused. It felt like a whole different book.

 How it should have ended:

I really enjoyed the ending besides the weird possessing part. It just did not fit the book at all to me. I think it would’ve worked best if we found out Len faked his death instead. And resume with Casey being the one to bring him down.
